Presentation: Sustainable Rural Development and EcoVillage Training Program
Title: “Implementing an Integrated, Multi-Sectoral Approach to Community Based Development: the EcoVillage Model
Speech presented by Annie Goeke – Co-Director Earth Rights Institute
Besides our work in Nigeria, Earth Rights Institute has continued to develop the ground work needed to serve worldwide by drawing upon new knowledge and skills that are available. Our objectives are to create initiatives that identify and design holistic programs for the implementation of pilot projects in areas around the world that are recovering from the devastation by war, ecological catastrophe, economic collapse or significant political instability. We work on designing a blueprint to be used for the implementation of integrated community building and management programs that address food security, health security, financial security, job security, environmental security and eco-restoration in the decision making process.
This past year, we have had the opportunity to begin the process of some new pilot programs. For instance, one is on the development of a Clean Cotton Campaign for Africa. A program to establish a North/South green trade initiative developed and designed by Earth Rights Institute with partners such as the Global Greens and European Parliament. The purpose of this program is to bring economic prosperity and sustainable development to the African nations that rely on cotton production. By shifting their cotton production towards a greener farming method, they will not only be able to ensure a market to sell their cotton crop at a fair price but they will be able to restore their environment. ERI will consult on how to develop a secure green cotton market between the farmers, buyers and conscious consumers. This partnership will include some African nations, in particular the Western nations and perhaps the Congo, Brazil, and the European Trade Commission. We are just starting to make an alliance with Father Jean Claude Atusameso, President of Jatukik Providence Foundation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
We would be happy to talk to you after this presentation about any of our programs. Earth Rights Institute feels it is important that organizations with similar goals keep finding ways to coordinate, collaborate and support one another. Hope you can join us in our goal to give communities the ability to become more self-reliant and ecologically sound.
