The Georgist Registry Global Report: Latin America THE HENRY GEORGE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCE, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC Lucy DeSilva, Director Apato #758 Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic The ideas of Henry George are very well known and seriously recognized in this country as an answer to many of its economic and social problems, largely because of the influence of School graduates. 3,177 participants have graduated from the courses (basics and tax reform) during the period from mid 1994 to the present. A practical tax reform course and the basic Henry George courses have been offered throughout the year since the School's inception in 1966. During that period, the School has engaged in hundreds of seminars, conferences, radio and television interviews, submission of articles to newspapers and magazines, and contacts with public officials and leaders of industry. Special discussion sessions are conducted weekly for new teachers, old timers, and alumni. This year, on September 29, the School will celebrate its 30th anniversary and many activities are being planned that will help demonstrate the importance and relevance of Georgist principles to solutions to the country's problems. Many people share in the work of the School, but the following have been especially active and effective: Carlos Carrero, Fermin Acosta, Lucėa Vasquez, Adriano de la Cruz, Ulises Montäs, Cesar Peralta, Geraldo Mateo, Hector Quialey, Elena Hernandez, Feliz Fernandez, Marcelo Puello, Rafael Ureņas. We welcome the support of our stateside colleagues.
ICE continues to offer classes and seminars, to do research and to produce publications. To expand these activities, the Institute has moved to new quarters at the address shown above. At the University of Buenos Aires, Dr. Sandler teaches a course on the philosophy of the law, keyed to the concepts of Henry George, to about 100 students a year (since 1992). Four or five young professors have become fellow advocates of George's concepts. Dr. Sandler, these Argentinean colleagues, professor Josep Soleri Corrals of Barcelona, Spain, and Juan Carlos Zuccoti, now in Miami, USA, are collaborating in the publication of a monthly journal under the banner of ICE -- EL DEFENSOR DEL CONTRIBUYENTE (The Taxpayer's Defender). Issue #5 has just been printed. The journal addresses political and economic issues and social problems as they relate to the Argentine econmic crisis, all from a Georgist perspective.
P.O. Box 11-3352 ICEPAL started its activities two years ago as an overseas chapter of ICE with headquarters in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It has published two reports on the economics and social conditions in Argentina: "Argentina 1994" and "Tendencies and Perspectives on the Argentine Economy," giving the Georgist solution to the great land question and related problems in South America. Icepal is publishing a full 10 lesson course, "Fundamental Economics" in a monthly newpaper of Buenas Aires. Dr. Zuccotti has also established contacts with Cuban expatriots in Florida as well as other South Americans there for the purpose of establishing an educational and political action program.
